Ilmenite (Titanium Iron Ore) – The Cornerstone of Titanium Industry
Ilmenite is the fundamental raw material for the global titanium industry. As one of the key heavy minerals recovered from placer deposits, ilmenite is commonly associated with zircon and rutile. It is concentrated through gravity separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation to obtain high-quality heavy mineral sand. Ilmenite features dark brown to black color, submetallic luster, high density and stable chemical properties.

More than 90% of ilmenite globally is consumed to produce titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Titanium dioxide is widely used in architectural coatings, industrial paints, plastics, rubber, paper-making, printing inks and daily chemical products, valued for its excellent hiding power, whiteness and weather resistance.
The core quality indicators include TiO₂ grade, impurity content, moisture and particle size. Ilmenite of different grades can be applied in sulphate-process and chloride-process titanium dioxide production. It can also be smelted into high titanium slag and synthetic rutile for downstream titanium manufacturing.
The remaining portion of ilmenite is used for manufacturing titanium sponge and titanium alloys. Titanium alloys are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and high-strength materials, widely adopted in aerospace, shipbuilding, chemical equipment, medical implants and high-end machinery. Besides, ilmenite can serve as welding rod coatings, flux for steel smelting, and raw materials for ceramics and glass.
From architectural coatings to aerospace components, from daily plastic products to premium medical alloys, ilmenite acts as the upstream foundation of the trillion-dollar new material industry. Amid global supply chain volatility, consistent and qualified ilmenite is essential for manufacturers to stabilize production and control costs.
